When a child enters out-of-home care, it is likely that a court order placed an expiry date on that care, usually on a young person's 16th or 18th birthday. When a child turns 15, a case meeting will be held to develop a ‘leaving care plan’.
This plan will include ways in which the young person can be supported through after care services to deal with any issues that may arise after leaving care. This is designed to reduce the stress involved in leaving care and learning to live independently.
Read more about how a young person can start planning for their future and support they can get after leaving care.
Do you know a young person who has been, or is currently in out-of-home-care that is looking for employment and training? DCJ and Service NSW have partnered to create a Traineeship and Internship program for young care leavers.
This program offers care leavers, aged 16 and above, an amazing opportunity to receive paid and practical on the-job-experience at locations across regional and metropolitan NSW.
The traineeship program will engage young people in a full-time 12-month program. Young people will receive ongoing support and mentoring in their role as a Digital Service Representative Trainee or a Customer Concierge Operator Trainee, all while being paid and working towards a Certificate III in Business (Customer Engagement).
The internship program will engage young people in a full-time 3-6 month program. Young people will receive ongoing support and mentoring in their temporary role as a Digital Service Representative or Customer Concierge Operator – all while earning a salary. Young people engaged in the program will be awarded a certificate of completion at the end of the program.
For both the traineeship program and in the internship program, there is potential for ongoing employment upon completion of the program.
