Sexuality and gender diverse children and young people who experience child abuse, and those who are in care, are amongst our most vulnerable. They face discrimination, stigma and greater challenges in finding their community of belonging in care. Parents and carers who identify as sexuality and gender diverse may also experience systemic and community discrimination; adding additional pressures to the normal challenges of caregiving. This FACSIAR lunch and learn presented insights into inclusive practice with sexuality and gender diverse children and young people, their parents and carers, family and kin.
A/Prof Adam Bourne from the “Writing themselves in” study discussed the factors which influence health of LGBTQIA+ young people in care and Dr Luke Gahan from the Australian Institute of Family Studies spoke about inclusive communication with LGBTIQ+ clients.
Following this, there was a live discussion with panel members with a range of experiences to share in working with sexuality and gender diverse children and young people. Note, the panel discussion was not recorded.
