DCJ Multicultural Plan

The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) Multicultural Plan 2022 – 2025 (PDF, 6.0 MB) aims to ensure people from multicultural backgrounds have equitable access and experiences with our services. It provides a framework for the department to meet specific needs of multicultural communities in NSW through the development of considered policies and delivery of tailored and inclusive services.

About the plan

Government agencies are required to develop and implement a multicultural plan and to report annually on the initiatives planned. The DCJ Multicultural Plan 2022 – 2025 provides a framework for embedding the multicultural principles set out in the Multicultural NSW Act 2000. The principles promote consideration and inclusion of specific needs of multicultural communities within core business operations over the next four years.

The plan reflects our combined strengths and continued goal to support an equitable communities and justice system where cultural and linguistic needs are recognised and addressed in policy development, engagement, leadership, service planning and delivery.

Our purpose at DCJ is to help create a safe, just, resilient and inclusive NSW in which everyone has the opportunity to realise their potential. The desired outcomes of the plan are to ensure that DCJ achieves the following:

  • Provide accessible services that promote participation for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • Is a contemporary business that provides high quality and culturally responsive programs and services
  • Use our understanding of community needs, experiences and identities to inform the work it does;
  • Builds the capacity and capability of the communities we serve and our workforce.

There were nine main themes that emerged from extensive consultations held with internal and external stakeholders. These nine themes shaped the development of the new plan and have fed into the proposed strategies. The consultation outcomes also provide a way forward for DCJ to achieve targets, as per the department's legislative obligations.

The plan in action

As a department, our diverse workforce is one of our strongest assets. By valuing the backgrounds, experiences and perspectives of all our people, we enable innovation, and the delivery of quality services for the NSW community. DCJ is committed to delivering on our priority to create a workplace that truly values unity, respect and inclusion.
