One Mob One Job is a driver of change within the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). The Department delivers services such as Community Housing, Courts, Out of Home Care, Youth Justice, and Child Protection. One Mob One Job also includes Corrective Services, which was part of the DCJ until late 2024.
Some families use many of these services over a long period of time, sometimes generations. This change recognises the need for Community lived experience in designing solutions that will help break the cycle for these families.
Many of these families are Aboriginal due to the ongoing impacts of colonialism. This change is promoting the voice of Aboriginal people in working together to create a system that works.
The current system is not working for all families. Families need a system that is integrated and values culture and lived experience. By creating services with Community and applying Aboriginal perspectives into this change, we're building a system that works for families.
By focusing on the strengths of families and the knowledge shared by community leaders, we are building a system that not only eases the burden of repeating traumatic stories but also empowers families to participate in shaping their own futures.
Co-design is a process One Mob One Job is taking with community:
· Yarning and telling stories to deeply understand
· Inviting community to share their experiences truthfully
· Creating solutions together in place-based areas, always looking at the experience of families.
· Ideas are tried in specific areas, and where possible they will be rolled out across NSW.
We are creating a system that is fair and works for everyone. By focusing on cultural understanding and involving communities in every step, we aim to create lasting change. This is about more than fixing what is broken – it is about creating something better for the future, together.
