Coercive control is a pattern of abuse. In the beginning he framed it as advice. I thought he was trying to be helpful. Then his advice became criticisms. He used words and demands to humiliate me leaving me embarrassed and ashamed.
He wanted to control every part of my life. He took away my freedom by deciding where I could go and who I could talk to. He made threats to separate me from my children if I didn’t obey his rules. I was scared that I would never see them again.
Some of the abusive behaviours seemed minor on their own, but together they made me feel like I was caught in a web of abuse.
Coercive control causes serious harm. No one deserves abuse. There is help available, call the Translating and Interpreting Service on 13 14 50 and ask to contact 1800RESPECT.
