Thinking about becoming a JP?

What are the benefits of Aboriginal JPs for mob? Cultural understanding, connection and trust, support and guidance, and accessibility

If you’re someone who wants to support your community, no matter where you’re located, becoming a JP could be a great way to help. JPs are trusted volunteers who assist with important paperwork like witnessing signatures and certifying documents.

Having more Aboriginal JPs means people can access support that’s local, culturally respectful, and trusted by community.

    Becoming a JP was for me to give back to

    community and give back to mob and to

    00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:14.080

    help wherever I can. I've been lucky in

    the role that I'm in now with TAFE New

    00:00:11.040 --> 00:00:19.760

    South Wales that I can be a JP alongside

    my role and I can see students thrive

    00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:23.920

    and I can help them get there by, you

    know, certifying documents. It's not

    00:00:21.760 --> 00:00:27.359

    just a quick tick and flick of a box.

    If they're telling you a story, because

    00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:30.960

    some of these situations, they're not the

    best situation that they're going

    00:00:29.439 --> 00:00:37.120

    through at the time. So they do need

    that support network and being that JP

    00:00:33.760 --> 00:00:43.280

    and community for mob is yeah supporting

    and guiding as well. It's one of the

    00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:48.239

    most rewarding volunteer programs that's

    available and it gives you a sense of

    00:00:46.160 --> 00:00:53.120

    purpose in life. It makes you feel like

    you're giving back and you're actually

    00:00:50.719 --> 00:00:56.120

    supporting the people that's in your

    community.

Why Aboriginal JPs are important

Aboriginal JPs bring valuable cultural knowledge and lived experience to the role. Whether it’s helping someone with housing paperwork, supporting Elders with health forms, or being there when community members are going through tough times, having someone they trust makes a difference.

The JP role is about being there for community when it matters most.
